What’s Happening?

West Northamptonshire Council is proposing to introduce parking charges in Brackley, Daventry, and Towcester for the first time ever. They’ve already allocated £475,000 for parking meters in their draft budget – before the consultation has even closed.

The council claims this is about “fairness” – but the real reason is to plug a £50 million budget gap. Using parking charges to raise revenue is potentially unlawful under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.

The evidence is clear: parking charges kill market towns. Customers will simply go to Rushden Lakes, Bicester Village, or shop online instead.
